Build connections before learning every rule

Your first mission is to let the club know you and to know whom to ask for help. Complete these five small actions and you are off to a strong start.

Do not know your VPE or mentor?At your next meeting, ask the host or any club officer: “Please introduce me to the Vice President Education and, if our club has mentors, help me contact one.” If you do not yet have club contact details, start with the club finder.

YEAR 1 · OBSERVER TO PARTICIPANT

Mission: build a steady habit of participating

Use speeches, meeting roles, and feedback loops to find your voice and make the club a safe place to practise.

Focus on these

  • Complete your Ice Breaker and keep moving through suitable Pathways projects
  • Try foundational meeting roles and learn how a meeting works
  • Carry one feedback point from each speech into your next practice

Take on work that needs judgement and collaboration. Ask not only “How did I do?” but “How did I make this meeting better?”

Focus on these

  • Continue Pathways and choose a challenge that needs deeper preparation
  • Practise supportive roles such as Evaluator, General Evaluator, or meeting Toastmaster
  • Help a new member begin, or try one club service responsibility

Mission: widen your impact and pass experience forward

Use the communication and leadership skills you have practised in larger projects, teams, and communities—and make starting easier for the members who follow.

  • Complete a meaningful learning milestone and choose your next worthwhile challenge
  • Serve as a mentor, club officer, or volunteer beyond the club if it interests you
  • Turn experience into a process, training, or support that saves others time
